Blue Sky Bay: A Nautical-Inspired Bed and Breakfast

Cheng-Che Chen's Award-Winning Interior Design for a Unique Hospitality Experience

The design of Blue Sky Bay is anchored on the concept of a "boat", a theme that resonates with the client's yacht-touring business. This principle has been applied to both the architectural appearance and the interior design of the bed and breakfast. The architecture is positioned to get sunlight straight to the reception hall, enhancing the texture of the wood-finish tiles. The use of materials such as calcium silicate and teak board, along with design elements like L-shape floor, small portholes, and dangling lights, evoke a strong sense of being on a boat.

The bed and breakfast, which occupies a space of 470 square meters, is designed with a focus on comfort and commercial strategy. According to Chen, the visual effect of a bed and breakfast is as crucial to tourists as the performance is to an art show. The rooms, aptly named "sky", exude a cheerful and pleasant atmosphere, further enhanced by the plantings decorating the back balcony.

One of the unique features of the design is the strategic placement of the staircase in the middle of the base. This allows daylight to scatter across the indoor space, creating a vision akin to emerging on the deck from the cabin of a boat. This design element not only adds to the nautical theme but also optimizes the use of natural light.

Despite the creative and technical challenges, Chen's design successfully captures the essence of a boat and translates it into a comfortable and visually appealing bed and breakfast. The design not only caters to the functional needs of the establishment but also enhances the overall guest experience, making each stay a unique journey.

Blue Sky Bay is a testament to Chen's innovative approach to interior design and his ability to create spaces that tell a story.
